The Finnish gambling operator Veikkaus is staying a step ahead of money launderers and problem gamblers by implementing new ID requirements and wager limits for players. The new rules will be in place by June 10 and, if successful, could set a standard for retail betting shops across the European Union.

Beginning on Friday, players who step into one of Veikkaus’ retail betting shops will be asked to register as a “Veikkaus Loyal Customer.” In doing so, they’ll be required to present a form of ID such as a drivers license or an previously registered Veikkaus card. Company officials are hoping that this will allow them to spot problem gamblers and underage players more effectively than the methods they’d been using.

Veikkaus is also implementing a new €1,500 ($1800 USD) daily limit for players. This step is designed to thwart both problem gambling and money laundering. Criminal organizations and single scufflaws often attempt to pass off cash at casinos and retail betting shops.

In a statement reported on by g3newswire.com, Juha-Matti Mäkilä, Veikkaus’ betting director explained the rationale behind the new rules saying, “The condition of identification and the limit of the game in long-distance betting also mean that we are better able to prevent money laundering and match manipulations in fixed-odds betting, which has been the most sensitive to abuse as a game form. In Finland, match manipulations and related betting abuses have already become smaller than in our neighboring countries. We are now continuing this work with the identification requirement brought to Pitkäveto and the EUR 1,500 player and daily purchase limit for point-of-sale gaming.”

If effective, Veikkaus’ new rules could set the standard for other European Union gambling operators.
